Vessyl – the smart cup that knows & tracks what you’re drinking in real-time

Over the years, we have come across a lot of ‘smart’ gadgets. We have seen smart phones, smart watches, smart TVs, smart helmets, smart fridges and many other such innovative devices. The latest to join the ‘smart’ bandwagon is our humble little mug!

Vessyl is a smart mug by industrial designer Yves Behar and Mark One, which can detect the kind of drink that’s poured into it. It has a clean, minimalistic look and can hold 385 ml of liquid. The mug can not only identify the drinks poured into it, but will even  tell you it’s dietary content, such as the amount of sugar, protein, calories, fat or caffeine contained. Vessyl also keeps a track of your water requirement and tells you whether you need to drink more water or not. A vivid blue line on its surface rises and falls depending on your hydration level. The device also displays other consumption data, such as how much caffeine or alcohol you’ve had thus far.

So how does this thing work? Well, under its aluminium chassis, Vessyl features a proprietary molecular sensor, that can scan the entire beverage content without coming into contact with it. Once it takes all the reading, you can see the results directly on the display panel of the mug or through your smartphone.

All the data recorded can be synchronised with your smart-phone via the supported app and you can keep a tab on your drinking habits in real time. It connects to an iPhone using Bluetooth 4.0 and all the data uploaded can be integrated with other popular activity trackers.

Mark One, the company behind Vessyl claims that it is the first ever consumer product to automatically track consumption in real time. The team also reveals that the mug is not entirely depended on a preset library of drinks while identifying the nutritional content, but the processor and a special algorithm is the real reason behind its accurate analysis.

Seven years in development, the device was designed by Yves Beher, also known for designing the Jawbone range of speakers. The mug, with its ultra modern look features a spill-proof lid and a non-stick interior. The accompanying charging coaster can juice up the gadget in flat 60 minutes wirelessly, and you won’t need to charge it again for an entire week.

Currently Vessyl is out as a pre-production unit to access consumer response. Early backers can pre order it for $99. The team plans to enter production by early 2015 and the device will then retail at $199.
