Sense – The big daddy of all sleep tracking devices

Sense – the sophisticated Sleep Tracker from Hello

There are many wearable devices that are making it very easy to keep a track of your health and fitness, but sleep is emerging as an area that is arguably the most important. Here’ s what James Proud who co-founded Hello – the company behind Sense, has to say about this elegant sleep tracker.

According to Proud, the 22 year old former Thiel Fellow, humans spend one-third of their lives sleeping. Consider the average human lifespan – 75 years. Simple math will tell you that 25 years of that is spent on just sleep!! How you spend the rest of our lives, completely depends on how you sleep each night.

There are already a slew of devices and apps that track your sleeping habits. But they only tell you the length of time you have been sleeping for. Sense, tracks not just your sleep, but your environment too! It works silently in the background, tracking everything from dust particles to loud sounds to the ambient light, so you can get that fitful sleep you always keep dreaming about.

The Sense system

The elements of Sense sleep tracker system

Sense consists of a glowing orb, that can be placed by your bedside, a Sleep Pill that can be clipped to your pillow cover and a mobile app that brings it all together. This trifecta – is all Sense needs to give you a fitful sleep.

Sleep Pill

The pill is packed with an accelerometer, a gyroscope and a battery (that lasts a whole year!). The Sleep Pill’s main function is to track the length and depth of your sleep. It even tracks all the tossing and turning you do when you are asleep. All this information is relayed to the Sense’s orb through low energy bluetooth and ANT automatically- no syncing necessary!

You can use a second pill as well, to see if your partners snoring or movement is disrupting your sleep. Sense is capable of keeping track of each of your sleep patterns separately.

The Glowing Orb

To tell you how the environment affects your sleep cycle Sense’s Orb collects data on noise, temperature, humidity and particulate matter in your bedroom.  It keeps collecting and accumulating the data every night. Analyzing this data will tell you whether your sleep was disturbed by bright lights, a rumbling truck or (for those with nasal allergies) dust/pollen. A speaker system in Sense’s orb can be used to  play back recordings to see exactly what it was that disturbed you

If you are the kind who can sleep better only when white noise or a soothing sound is playing in the background, Sense can do that too! A smart alarm in Sense is capable of waking you up at the perfect point in the sleep cycle, so you don’t feel groggy when you get out of the bed.

Sleep Score

What do you think your Sleep Score will be?

Sense takes into account all the data the Pill and Orb collect to give you a score out of 100 on how you slept the night before. it looks at both the environment and how you slept yourself. A loud sound lowers your score whereas a dark room will boost it up. Sense gives a breakup of your score so you can check and fix whatever is preventing you from reaching that elusive century.

Sense is currently seeking funding on Kickstarter, but with 24 days to go it has already reached $1,075,772 of its $100,000 target (at the time of writing). Pledging $99, will get you your own Sense. This is $29 less than the official pre-order price. The product will ship in November 2014.
