Your Smartphone is now a Panic Button

Being stuck in a hostage like situation, without the means to call for help is a thing that nightmares are made of. Its also something that that political activists and journalists reporting from the front-lines of the politically oppressive regimes fear. But Amnesty International is here to circumvent these fears with its aptly titled app – Panic Button.

Amnesty International started an open design process in 2012, to find different ways to protect journalists and activists around the world through the use of technology. Dozens of activists, designers, programmers and security experts banged their heads together and Panic Button came into being.

Panic Button transforms your smartphone into a discreet alarm

Panic Button, is a brilliant invention as it transforms your smartphone into a discreet alarm that can be activated secretly.  At the press of a button, the Panic Button app sends alerts and your location data to friends and colleagues so they can get help faster. That’s not all it does, once installed the app disguises itself as a calculator app on your phone. When you are in trouble, hit a button and it sends out alerts until either you tell it to stop or the phone battery runs out or your phone is switched off or has been damaged. What makes Panic Button awesome is that you don’t have to even load up the app. Hit the power button 5 times and it starts broadcasting the messages. This is pretty neat because when the militia is on your heels, you might not have the time to load up the app. This feature might be the difference between life and death!

Panic Button needs access to the core features of the operation system your phone runs on and hence is available only for Android phones now. iOS and Windows phones don’t allow the access the app requires. But that not a problem as the Android OS is very popular in the third world countries.  If you think this app is just the thing you need, you can download it here.
