Nutella Maniacs – Start stocking up!
Nutella Lovers – brace yourselves! There’s bad news coming your way. It seems like hazelnuts – the main ingredient in Nutella, is running out all across the world. At the rate people are consuming Nutella, soon, there might be no hazelnuts left to make this lip-smacking, spoon-licking sugary spread.
Ferrero, the company behind Nutella uses up a quarter of the worlds hazelnuts supply to feed all the Nutella crazy people in the world. If you didn’t know it already its very very difficult to grow and harvest hazelnuts. 70% of this crop comes from a small, steep strip of land on the coast of Turkey. The same fields were destroyed by frost and hailstorms earlier this year. This incident has raised the cost of hazelnuts to 60% – from an earlier $6,500 per ton, to a whopping $10,500.In addition to this, there is a steep demand for cocoa too. If cocoa farmers do not get the help they need in harvesting it, estimates show that the demand could become unsustainable by 2020. This global shortage of both hazelnuts and cocoa will be notoriously difficult on Nutella, which contains over 50 hazelnuts per every 400-gram jar.
Luckily, Ferrero had acquired Turkey’s leading hazelnut manufacturer, Oltan Group, to ensure that it receives the majority of the country’s harvest. Moreover, looking at the high demand for the nut, farmers in Australia and Chile have launched their own farms. Scientists too are working hard to develop a more resilient hazelnut.
It seems certain that the prices of Nutella are going to skyrocket soon. Lets hope Ferrero survives this treacherous time. In the mean time, I am stocking up on my Nutella and chocolate bar reserves.
