A new year has started… and so should you!
You’ve been thinking about it, have a plan, it’s been playing on your mind, but you’re just waiting for the right time to start? Well, let’s make this clear right from the word go. We are sitting at the beginning of a brand new year, and it’s time for you to start your thing, too — not because the stars are right or the government policies have changed in your favour but simply because there is no better time to start than now! This was true six months ago, and it is true now. If you wish to walk, you’ll never do it until you stand up!
Not sure on how to begin?
Begin with what you have, where you are and what you can do. Every single entrepreneur started that way. A certain gentleman, who had a small business of cycles, today owns one of the largest telecom networks in the world (no points for guessing his name). He started off during the infamous License Raj days in India, which was probably by far one of the worst times to do business in India—far worse than today. India’s largest group, Reliance, also started during those times. The Tatas started even earlier, back in the days of the British Raj. These are all names you and I have heard of as being some of the biggest today. Liberalisation of the Indian economy is on quite a roll, and doing business in independent India has never been simpler than it is today.
Expectations are growing!
The industry is expecting a lot more from the government in the years to come, and the various chambers of commerce are voicing this loud and clear in every interaction with the government. Yes, there will be the direct tax code and the GST, and they will make life easier (despite the teething troubles that are likely to occur). Yet, it is very clear that they will simply affect those in business, and the ones on the sidelines will only be spectators to the show. In simple terms, it does not matter to you if the no-ball rule has changed in cricket because you don’t play cricket! The change may affect Zaheer Khan and his colleagues but not you and I—not those who do not play the game.
Nike rightly says in its punch line: Just do it! It’s as true for you as it is for anyone else, whether they are wearing Nike or not! Chance has and always will favour the prepared mind. And in all honesty, I’d appreciate a five hundred thousand dollar worth of turnover more than a million dollar ‘idea’ rotting in the archives of your brain. If it ain’t out there, then it’s worthless.
Excuses will remain forever, be it in 2011 or 2050, so stop wasting time and get started!
This is the moment, now is the time. Happy 2011!
