Design is not just an option

design is not just an option Design is not just an option

Design is not just an option

We have never seen an automobile manufacturer like BMW, Mercedes etc. running around to launch a new technology, make a new engine and throw a temporary template design at it, have we? But we do and will see many websites and app makers throwing “just another theme” at it. Ever wondered, why?

Maybe you are building the greatest application in the world with flawless code. But the only way a user will interact with your app, is through its interface – thus user interface.

Was that clear enough? User interface is THE ONLY WAY, a user interacts with the application! And users are a major, if not the only, reason of why you are building the application in the first place. Ignoring UI is like ignoring the final destiny of your application. Losing the battle on final frontier of the war.

Wonder which button would you click on an iPhone?

“To Design or not” is NOT the question!

Either there is design, or chaos. As humans we don’t like chaos, unless bringing form and design out of chaos is your task (that’d be the designers work, btw).  Yet we see so many startups putting design in the “do it later when we can afford it!” list. So can your startup afford to lose and/or piss off users? Or better, can your startup afford to confuse users?

That’s paramount to saying your startup can afford to die!

amazon ui Design is not just an option

What if Amazon had ignored its design?

There is no price for user - only the one you put at it. Shedding a few more hour to win the final frontier counts. A battle lost on final frontier is a lost battle anyhow.

And this is  just the begining …

Interface is just one part of the design. What may follow are the experience design, emotional response, communication and other endless layers of the interaction channel.  Design of your application is the flow of information, back and forth, to user and you. If this channel is broken, you’re wasting every ounce of energy gone into the process.

Conclusion

Ever wondered why is it that your users aren’t finding your app/website as awesome as you built it? It’s because the awesomeness was not communicated. It’s because it was not designed that way.

Functioning of different systems of body is design. Their communication with each other is design. The way a cell works, is in itself, a design (that makes programmers one of the most sophisticated designers out there). Design is nature, purpose and function.

If design is necessary for your existence, how can it be optional for your startup?

Design is definitely the most critical thing, but the post could have been written better than read like a rant (BOLD CAPS INCLUDED). Throwing iPhone snapshots is cliched too.

I would rewrite this by including some anecdotes of design being neglected, and how design should be considered from the word go, and what resources startups have if they don’t have a designer co-founder.

I also feel there’s nothing wrong in “throwing a template” to get the MVP out and validate the offering/measure the interest.

tl;dr – good sentiment, but the post could have been better IMO.

Thanks for the feedback, man! Sure I need to stop ranting and actually put some helpful things out there. Both, theories and follow it step-by-steps :P
